My All American (2015)
Interracial relationships and marriages are becoming more common in the United States, according to a new Cornell University study. The number of interracial marriages involving whites, blacks and Hispanics each year in the United States has jumped tenfold since the s, but the older individuals are, the less likely they are to partner with someone of a different race, finds the new study. This trend reflects the increasing acceptance of interracial relationships in today’s society,” said Kara Joyner, assistant professor of policy analysis and management at Cornell and co-author of a study on interracial relationships in a recent issue of the American Sociological Review Vol.
Although more young adults are dating and cohabiting with someone of a different race, the study found that interracial relationships are considerably less likely than same-race relationships to lead to marriage, though this trend has weakened in recent years. To explore the changing patterns of interracial sexual relationships during the transition to adulthood, Joyner and her co-author, Grace Kao, associate professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and the National Health and Social Life Survey, some of the first nationally representative surveys to collect information on sexual relationships.
Unlike other studies, which typically look at marriage or cohabitation and sometimes at current dating relationships, this study looked at trends in these relationships over a year period.

Introductions to Economics Freakonomics , Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner In Freakonomics, authors Steven D. Dubner unpack how people respond to incentives by investigating seemingly non-economic subjects like how parents pick names for their children and even how the legalization of abortion could be responsible for a drop in crime.
Provocative and entertaining, Freakonomics is a crash course in the populist application of economics.

By Aaron Smith and Monica Anderson Digital technology and smartphones in particular have transformed many aspects of our society, including how people seek out and establish romantic relationships. Here are five facts about online dating: When we first studied online dating habits in , most Americans had little exposure to online dating or to the people who used it, and they tended to view it as a subpar way of meeting people. Today, nearly half of the public knows someone who uses online dating or who has met a spouse or partner via online dating — and attitudes toward online dating have grown progressively more positive.
Online dating use among to year-olds has also risen substantially since the last Pew Research Center survey on the topic. One factor behind the substantial growth among younger adults is their use of mobile dating apps. But it still means that one-third of online daters have not yet met up in real life with someone they initially found on an online dating site.
Many online daters enlist their friends in an effort to put their best digital foot forward. Despite the wealth of digital tools that allow people to search for potential partners, and even as one-in-ten Americans are now using one of the many online dating platforms, the vast majority of relationships still begin offline.

When’s the Right Time for Sex? Experts discuss the consequences of not playing by your own dating rules. By Elizabeth Heubeck From the WebMD Archives Whether you’re new to the dating scene, a regular player, or jumping back into the game after a long hiatus, the same questions about dating rules apply: How soon do you lean over for that first kiss? Is it too early for a steamy make-out session?
And last — but by no means least — how do you know when the time is right for sex? From Stalemate to Soulmate. According to the singles whom Allen has encountered, boomers generally play by far different dating rules than young, something daters. While you can’t apply a one-size-fits-all response to sexual dating rules regardless of age or experience, professionals who have studied the topic say it is a good idea to develop a set of prudent dating rules – before the big date.
By and large, Allen and other relationship experts endorse a cautious approach to the dating rules of sex. Her rationale for these dating rules may seem obvious, but many people tend to forget in the heat of the moment. Other experts agree that sex too-soon can lead to undesirable consequences. Email Bio Follow October 15 BOSTON — Accusations that the Harvard University admissions process is rigged against Asian Americans were lobbed and parried Monday as the trial opened in a case that could become another landmark in the long debate over affirmative action. Students for Fair Admissions, a group representing Asian American applicants, alleged here in federal court that Harvard violated their civil rights by penalizing them for their race at key stages of deliberations.
Mortara, representing the plaintiff, homed in repeatedly on statistical analyses that he said show Harvard gives Asian Americans significantly lower ratings for subjective personal qualities, including leadership and compassion, than applicants from other racial groups. That rating, he said, is often crucial to the outcome.
Lee, denied that the university discriminates against Asian Americans or any other demographic group. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs is presiding over the trial and expects to issue a verdict. There will be no jury. Both sides assume Burroughs will not have the final word because any verdict faces a near-certain appeal. Eventually, the case could reach the Supreme Court. Expected to last at least three weeks, the trial puts a new twist on an old controversy.

SHARE While I was traveling around the Iberian Peninsula last year, Spain was receiving some bad press back on the other side of the Atlantic — as an object lesson in how not to do things. But I did spend some time walking around the streets of Salamanca, Sevilla, and Barcelona, and much of that time involved discussions about culture and evolution with several Spanish psychologists, so I learned something about the differences and the similarities between Spanish and American societies.
The other night I was wandering around the streets of Alicante a medium-sized town on the Mediterranean coast south of Valencia. It was approaching 9 p. I enclose two pictures I took in the same square in Salamanca, once in the afternoon, then again at night notice there are lots of people at both times. Salamanca square by day Salamanca square by night This is related to another salient difference: As I understand it, Spaniards take a two-hour lunch that may begin at 2 or 3 in the afternoon, or later.
That lunch may well be accompanied by a glass of cerveza or vino, and that may be followed by a short nap. Spaniards then head back to work during the hours when most Americans are packing up to head home for dinner. Dinner in Spain starts at 9 P. All that seems very unnatural to me! From the perspective of an American business model, it hardly seems efficient, but the tapas sure are tasty.
Moreover, these changes are taking place across the religious landscape, affecting all regions of the country and many demographic groups. While the drop in Christian affiliation is particularly pronounced among young adults, it is occurring among Americans of all ages. The same trends are seen among whites, blacks and Latinos; among both college graduates and adults with only a high school education; and among women as well as men.
