Even team compositions can ruin a game experience. Blizzard has recently made a plethora of changes addressing that fact. EA hate is on its peak again, and justifiably so, but it’s getting silly. Doubly so with everyone seeing everything monetization related as deeply insidious and evil, when most of the time it’s not too bad. Yeah, Battlefront 2 shit the bed in a major way and Destiny 2 has issues Eververse issues are overblown compared to the issues elsewhere in the game, but everyone focuses on Eververse. The real problem with AAA studios is a quagmire of innovation regarding post-modern theme of video game production and the fundamental entry level for a small production crew to challenge a AAA studio becoming lower and lower with every generation of technological advancement. Which, when you get down to it, is exactly what happened to post-modern art leading to post-postmodern art on an immensely shortened timescale.
Someone else highlighted the Gears of War example, where the developers discovered that players losing their first few matches turned them off of PvP and caused significantly higher player dropoff compared to those that won them. So they eventually implemented a system that buffed up new players for their first few matches to give them a better chance of winning, or at least performing well, to provide a more enjoyable experience for them and in the longrun create a healthier online ecosystem.
A European developer once memorably called this a “cheeseburger level” because it was more targeted at their North American audience, and it was an introductory experience that was designed to give players an “easier” win to help them get comfortable with the game. They did this specifically in response to both player feedback and their internal metrics. And it worked, it absolutely helped their retention numbers with new players and helped drive engagement, without players realizing it or having a negative reaction.

I would much prefer to play a game against opponents that I have come to know enemies, or friends, or casual acquaintances on chat than against random unknowns, especially ones that may or may not be active opponents at any point. I wouldn’t call it boring, but more and more frustrating as you play: Players meet verbal offending and other abusive behaviour in most of the games of “Public Matchmaking“. Currently for travian, there is no player in the top of the game that can honestly say they dont cheat, or admitt they havnt hired people from countries like the phils and china to help them play the game for them while they sleep or are on holidays.

As a 35 year old player, 20 year veteran of RTS, and 17 year veteran of the Starcraft franchise, I have to say that Starcaft 2 is one of the most unfair video games I have ever played. When you complain about this imbalance on Blizzard forums you are told by both Players and Developers to “Learn to play”. In every other race matchup I can beat High Platinums and sometimes low Diamonds, but as Terran against Zerg I get beaten by players who are often 2 or 3 leagues below my base skill level, because the matchup is completely unfair.
Because a few APM pro gamers can split marines against banelings, they say that it is “fair”.

It is also a very much aimed at sustaining the original game’s success as an e-sport. Those virtues are also problematic when I try to render a critical judgment. StarCraft II does not feel like a new game, but a lavish new edition. But when I look at its accomplishments as a design, I mostly see achievements Blizzard attained twelve years ago.

Armies move and fight like the Keystone Kops, shambling around in disorganized hordes and coming to a dead stop when engaging targets, leaving trailing units bumbling around out of range. I’ve had 10 years to get used to RTS armies moving and fighting in formations, and doing battle with some rudimentary common-sense.
StarCraft II forces all that unwelcome micro-management back into my hands. This is not a stand against over-simplification.
