I wanted to cover three things We are creating and encouraging a culture of distraction where we are increasingly disconnected from the people and events around us and increasingly unable to engage in long-form thinking. People now feel anxious when their brains are unstimulated. We are losing some very important things by doing this. And we inhibit real human connection when we prioritize our phones over our the people right in front of us. What can we do about it? Is this path inevitable or can balance be restored? Alternatively, you can watch the video someone shot of it. See you if you see yourself in this. What are we losing — of ourselves, of our relationships to one another, of what in many ways, I would say, our humanity. What can we do about it.

The software outraged many users back in after it tagged images of a computer programmer and his friend as primates. Now, nearly three years later, it has been revealed the company has ‘fixed’ the issue by blocking identification of gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys. Twitter users have criticised the company for not working to develop a diverse model for an algorithm and instead just banning identification of gorillas and black people.

Every meeting which makes its way to a relationship, tends to involve feelings. One way or another, hearts get broken. Pay attention to the algorithm behind the curtain. Critics have pointed to a targeted ad campaign by Russian groups as proof that the Menlo Park-based company wasn’t minding the store — and alleged that disaster followed as a result. But that argument overlooks one key point: In showing microtargeted “dark ads” to users, Facebook was doing exactly what it was designed to do. The larger problem is not these specific Russian ads which Facebook refuses to disclose to the public — or even that Donald Trump was elected president — but the very system upon which the company is built.
Zuckerberg’s non-statement on Trump and fake news is a total cop out Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to increase transparency on political advertisements, while welcome, falls into the same trap.

He verified on the phone that both of his parent had passed and that his father was in the United States Air Force. This is cogent to the financial romance scheme that undoubtedly he was after because he said upon his father’s death he would inherit a gold mine of diamonds and gold to “be able to share with his forever companion,” on the Match.
As if this was not enough, with him demanding to see me in person, he stated he did not have a camera phone but was wealthy. I wish I was kidding but I am not.

Do you think people struggle to share your fervour for maths? Mathematicians are extremely proud of the pure form: With the advent of data being integrated into scientific research, all scientists have to be at least literate in the language of maths, even in the biological sciences. I think mathematicians are proud of that, too: What I try to do on the course [at UCL] is demonstrate how relevant and applicable mathematics is to everything.

But the matches these algorithms offer may be no better than picking partners at random, a study finds. Researchers asked about heterosexual undergrads at Northwestern University to fill out questionnaires assessing their personalities and romantic preferences. They were quizzed about things like self-esteem, goals, values, loneliness, what they were looking for in a partner, and how assertive or patient or creative they want the partner to be — and how much those things apply to them, says Samantha Joel, a psychologist at the University of Utah and lead author on the study , which was published last week in Psychological Science.
The researchers then designed an algorithm to try to identify what personality traits or preferences led to the in-person attraction using part of the data from both the personality surveys and the speed dating. They also asked it to predict who in the group would be attracted to whom based solely on their questionnaire answers.

Finding the right partner, whether for life or for Saturday night, is so important to so many people that you would think we might have cracked it by now. By assembling a vast array of date-worthy people in a searchable format, online dating seems like it should be a huge improvement on the old-fashioned methods of meeting people at work, through friends, or in bars and nightclubs. A simple survey that Norton conducted with two other behavioural scientists, Jeana Frost and Dan Ariely, revealed that people were unhappy with their online dating experience in three obvious ways.
The second was that it took for ever — the typical survey respondent spent 12 hours a week browsing through profiles and sending and receiving messages, yielding less than two hours of offline interaction. This was the third problem: To adapt a Woody Allen joke: Given that online dating tends to be tedious, time-consuming and fruitless, it is no surprise that we seem hungry for a better way. Most approaches to online dating have tried to exploit one of the two obvious advantages of computers: Apps such as Grindr and Tinder allow people to skim quickly through profiles based on some very simple criteria.
Are they available right now? That is, of course, fine for a one-night stand but less promising for a more committed relationship. The alternative, embraced by more traditional matchmaking sites such as Match. Because these pleasing results seem elusive, wishful thinking has gone into overdrive.

Just do the math. You may have thought you’d never need math once you got out of school, but it’s funny how the principals of math still influence our daily lives. We do math when we’re figuring how many minutes we have left for the month, or when we bake and want to double a recipe.
